AVEBE's position on specific societal issues

AVEBE's position on CO2 Emission Trading

Over the last 15 years we have managed significantly to reduce our specific CO2 emissions by decreasing energy consumption per tonne of product. Compared to 1989 figures, we now need 25% less energy per tonne of product, and thus emit considerably less CO2 per tonne of product. We participate in Covenant Benchmarking, and in the international benchmark the majority of our factories were among the world's top 10% in terms of energy efficiency. It is our objective and our obligation to maintain this position. AVEBE also participates in the Emission Trading System. In this CO2 emission allowances are allocated initially by the government. It is our responsibility to certify that these allowances comply with actual emissions by trading allowances or implementing energy reduction measures. The Emission Trading System and Covenant Benchmarking are both instruments which help us to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in a fair and effective way.

AVEBE's position on farming

Our supply chain is fully integrated from our farmer’s fields through to our customers.
We are the only major starch company in the world with such a set-up, and it enables us to guarantee constant quality and on-time deliveries. Our direct relationship with farmers is a mutually beneficial, non-exploitative association that should provide an acceptable return. Our aim is to have direct contact and contract with them. We promote entrepreneurship and expect professionalism and commitment to our principles for sustainable development. We manage our relationships with the farmers who provide raw materials and indeed many of the farmers are shareholders in the company. We work closely with farmers on matters of production planning and environmental protection and provide services including nursery programmes, individual consulting and study groups. We are working towards implementing these services globally.
