Avebe sets out on dream tour

26 Aug 2019
Riding 800 kilometres for a good cause

In the early hours of Monday the 26th of August, a team of nearly 20 cyclists left to turn their dream tour into a reality. The group consists of members and employees of the cooperative and over the coming week they will ride nearly 800 kilometres to collect money for Make-A-Wish. The cyclists will make their own dreams come true as well as those of many seriously ill children.

In the early hours, following a hearty breakfast in the Innovation Centre in Groningen, the riders set off on their first stage. Today the route will pass all the Dutch Avebe sites. Following the start at the Campus in Groningen, the tour passes the production site in Foxhol, the head office in Veendam, the production site in Gasselternijveen and the potato-breeding company Averis in Valthermond, before it goes on to the site in Ter Apelkanaal. Then they cross the border to the German production sites, where they visit the Avebe factories in the Wendland and Prignitz region later this week. The tour ends on Friday with a festive reception at the factory in Swedish Malmö. At that point the riders will have completed nearly 800 kilometres.

With the tour, the cyclists are collecting money for the foundation Make-A-Wish. This organisation is focused on fulfilling the wishes of seriously ill children. The driver behind this project is Eric Raad, an Avebe employee. This morning he got on his bike brimming with enthusiasm “It is just wonderful to see how everyone has picked this up and how together as Avebe members and colleagues we can make a difference to these children. It will be a tough tour, but it will also be a unique experience! Besides the cyclists and all those who made a donation, I would also like to thank our sponsors. This tour could not have happened without them. I would like to make special mention of our main sponsor Willis Towers Watson for their generous contribution.”

The route can be followed at https://www.avebe.com/avebe-makes-a-wish/ and via Avebe’s social-media channels on Twitter and LinkedIn. The team is calling on everyone to follow them and to make dreams come true. All donations welcome!

Avebe Centenary

The reason behind this sponsored bike ride is the Centenary of Avebe. A special anniversary marked by the cooperative of 2,300 Dutch and German starch-potato growers in many different ways. A number of activities are aimed at contributing to improving the vitality of employees and members of Avebe, but Avebe has more wishes on its list. The cooperation wants to make a significant contribution to a broad target group, and therefore it is organising this international sponsored bike ride. And so Avebe channels the power of the collective to make dreams come true. For more information about Avebe, please visit www.avebe.com
